Ondo and Kakaopay Securities Explore Global Distribution for Korean Equities

Ondo Finance and Kakaopay Securities are exploring a framework for distributing exposure to Korean listed equities internationally. The agreement is still exploratory, but it raises a useful question about where tokenization adds value when the underlying asset already trades in an established domestic market.

Korean equities and tokenized global distribution infrastructure.

Ondo Finance and Kakaopay Securities have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the international distribution of exposure to Korean listed equities.

The companies have identified three areas of cooperation: building a framework for international distribution, researching tokenization infrastructure and forming a joint task force to explore opportunities for overseas retail investors.

The agreement was signed on September 28 and announced the following day.

This is not yet a launch of tokenized Korean shares.

That distinction matters because the value of the project will depend on how the eventual structure connects the digital representation to the underlying Korean security.

Korean equities already have functioning issuance, trading, custody and settlement infrastructure.

Tokenization therefore needs to solve a distribution or market access problem rather than simply reproduce the same asset on another technical rail.

International access is one possible use case.

A digital representation may allow investors outside Korea to gain exposure through infrastructure that operates across a broader set of markets and hours. But the token itself does not remove the legal and operational constraints surrounding the underlying equity.

Ownership rights, corporate actions, custody, foreign investor rules, conversion between the token and the underlying share and the authoritative record of ownership still need to be defined.

Liquidity is another issue.

A tokenized representation does not automatically inherit the liquidity of the domestic exchange. If the digital asset trades in a separate venue or pool, the mechanism connecting its price and inventory to the underlying market becomes part of the operating model.

What to watch

The next meaningful announcement should contain structure rather than intent.

The market needs to know what investors would legally hold, where the underlying shares would be custodied, how conversion would work, which jurisdictions could access the product and where settlement would occur.

The MOU creates a route for those questions to be explored.

It does not answer them yet.
